Harold was inducted into the Army on July 6, 1918, when he was 24 years old. He was first assigned Fort MacArthur. This may have been where he did basic training, as this army base in southern California was a training center for soldiers destined for the front lines in WWI.

For two weeks (8/23 – 9/8, 1918), he was at Camp Eustis, Virginia. Fort Eustis, located near Newport News, was established in 1918. The original purpose was to serve as a point of concentration, organization, training and embarkation for the troops of the Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) intended for duty abroad as heavy field artillery, trench mortar batteries, and antiaircraft artillery units.

Harold was assigned to the 46th Artillery Coast Artillery (155 mm gun) Regiment on September 8, 1918. The 46th had been constituted in July 1918 as the 46th Arty, CAC, and activated September 1918 at Camp Eustis. They moved to Camp Stuart, VA, in October and shipped out to France via Newport News on October 14th, arriving in Brest on October 25th. They were posted at Libourne (Gironde), where they remained until the Armistice. Harold left Marseille on January 28, 1919 and the unit returned to the U.S. in February 1919.

From February 12th to Feb 17th he was assigned to the 8th Co., 153rd Depot Brigade (Depot Brigades processed incoming and outgoing personnel). I believe this may have been at Fort Dix. From then until his discharge he is listed as a mechanic with the 43 Co., 166th Depot Brigade, Fort Lewis He was discharged March 1, 1919.
