Andrew Newton, 81, of Aitkin, died November 18, 1980, at the Aitkin Community Nursing Home.

Born September 22, 1898, in McIntosh, he attended the McIntosh schools. He moved to Duluth in 1917 where he worked at the ore docks and attended accounting and machinist trade school. He married the former Hildur Lindau December 28, 1926, in Duluth. They moved to Aitkin in 1927. In 1933, he and his nephew, Clifford, founded the Aitkin Iron Works, which they sold to Carl Anderson in 1945. He then started the Newton Farm, which he operated until 1970 when he retired. He belonged to and was a past council member at First Lutheran Church. He also was a past member and officer of the Aitkin Volunteer Fire Department and the IOOF Lodge 164.

Funeral services were conducted from First Lutheran Church, November 22, with Pastor Gary Cumings officiating. Mrs. Burton Larson sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Mrs. William Hudson was organist. Lodge services were held November 21 at Sorensen-Root Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Charles Ziske, William Hudson, Donald Hagestuen, Lester Carr, Arthur Latvala and Gerald Hedberg.

Interment was held at Spencer Cemetery, Aitkin.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Paynovich of Coon Rapids, Mrs. Thomas (Jeanne) Trumbull of Kalispell, Montana; two sons, Major Donald Newton with the U.S. Army in Germany, Herman of Aitkin; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Phillipson of Kenosha, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Clara, Agnes, Anna, Sara, Thea and two brothers Alfred and Carl.
