Byron B. "Bucky" Buckingham, 86, of Nashua, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 14, 2006, at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare in Nashua.
Mr. Buckingham was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Groton, Mass., son of the late Horace W. and Elsie (Bailey) Buckingham. He had been a resident of Nashua since 1946.
He was the husband of Helen (Halko) Buckingham of Nashua, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Buckingham had been employed at Public Service of New Hampshire from 1946-90 as a line foreman.
He was a commander of several local veterans organizations, including state commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, chairman of the Mayor's Veterans Council for the City of Nashua, member of the State of NH Veterans Advisory Board and chairman of the Veterans' Parade Committee for many years. He was instrumental in the development of the Veteran Memorial Walk at Railroad Square, Vietnam Veteran Park, the Purple Heart Monument at NH Veterans Cemetery and the Purple Heart Military Trail for New Hampshire. He worked actively with Harbor Homes for Homeless Veterans and was an aide to Griff Dalainis, Ph.D., secretary of the U.S. Army for New Hampshire. Fraternally, he was a member of the 32nd Degree Masons.
Mr. Buckingham was an Army veteran and served during WWII. He received two purple hearts and four battle stars for his campaigns in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He also received a Silver and a Bronze Star.
He graduated from Groton High School.
Besides his parents, Mr. Buckingham was predeceased by two brothers, Donald W. Buckingham of Massachusetts, and Edward L. Buckingham of Texas.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Kenneth Buckingham of Nashua; a sister, Edith Taylor of Orlando, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Muriel Buckingham of Groton, Mass.; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vera Arling and her husband, Robert, of Westford, Mass., and Walter Halko and his wife, Jan, of Maine; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Davis Funeral Home in Nashua was in charge of arrangements.
