Navy in charge of Naval defenses in N.Carolina & Va. He defended Cape Hatteras, N.C., where he was captured & later exchanged. Eventually, he was appointed Flag Officer commanding the C.S.A. Naval forces in Europe until his resignation from duty Feb 28, 1865.
