MARY HELEN CHAPPELL, 77, of Colorado Springs, died Aug. 2, 1993, at a local hospital.
She was a bookkeeper.
Funeral services already have been held. Evergreen Funeral Home, Fountain and Union boulevards, handled arrangements.
Mrs. Chappell was born May 28, 1916, in Lawrenceville, Ill., to Earnest and Ruth (Inmon) Gosnell.
She had lived in the area since 1968.
Mrs. Chappell was a Women's Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) in the 1940s and she attained the rank of lieutenant. She flew secret missions, carrying documents and agents involved with the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. She had hundreds of hours flying B-17s, B-29s, C-46s, C-47s and C-54s.
She is survived by a son, Howard of Woodland Park; and two daughters, Nancy Salisbury of
Camargo, Okla., and Janet Cimino of Colorado Springs; and five grandchildren.

1946 NATIONAL AIR RACES,   Lt Gosnell (Chappell)  graduated from WASP pilot training with class 44-6 (1944) and served as a Women's Airforce Service Pilot during World War Two.
