HERNDON, ROBERT E., JR., COL. USAF (Ret.) Passed away at age 89 on August 14, 2006. Col. Herndon is survived by his wife of 64 years, Naomi Smith Herndon; four children, Robert E. Herndon, III, Judith Atwood, Karen Graddy and James Herndon. He also leaves five grand- children, two step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Col. Herndon was born in Little Rock, AR, September 28,1916. He graduated from Little Rock Junior College and then enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1940 for pilot training. He graduated in 1941 as a pilot. During World War II he flew 69 missions as a B-26 pilot in Africa and Italy. He was later assigned to Military Intelligence and then Commander of Defense Mapping and Charting in St. Louis, MO. He retired from the Air Force in 1969 after 30 years in the military. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Nine Clusters, Purple Heart, Croix de Guerre avec Palme. He served as Executive Secretary of the American Congress of Surveying and Mapping until 1979.
