He suffered from lung disease as a result of exposure at Kenesaw Mountain. This
worsened until his death on 8 March 1869. “The soldier was wounded in right
metatarsal bones destroyed and hand totally unfit for any use. It may improve
slightly.”—R. R. McDowell, M.D. 1865. Charles' hand was so painful, he was unable
to use the hand or arm or even move the fingers
