"Capt. Talman is dead at 52
Capt. Benjamin Long Edes Talman USN (Ret) died at Bethesda Naval Hospital after a heart attack yesterday. He was 52.
Capt. Talman held many key positions involving disarmament planning and the formulation of politico-military policy during his Navy career. He retired in 1958 because of a heart condition.

Born in 1912, Capt. Talman was a fifth generation Washington resident. He was a descendant of Peter Edes, a Boston pamphleteer active during the Revolution.
Capt. Talman graduated from the Naval Academy in 1935. For the next nine years he served on battleships, cruisers, destroyers and hydrographic survey ships. He took command of a destroyer in 1943, and participated in the invasions of Sicily and Italy.

After a year of supervising the coding and decoding of wartime messages for the Navy Department and the White House, Capt. Talman became the Navy Department communications watch officer.

From 1946 to 1948, he served as assistant chief of staff to the commander in chief of the Atlantic Fleet. For the next two years he was aide and Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Blandy, Commander in Chief Atlantic.

In 1950, Capt. Talman became Chief of the Plans and Programs Division in the Office of Military Assistance, Department of Defense. He was responsible for administering and planning the Foreign Military Assistance programs for the Far East.

A period at sea followed. In 1951, he became Executive Officer of the cruiser Salem, flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, and in 1952 he was made Commander of a squadron of destroyer escorts.

Two years later Capt. Talman was appointed head of the United Nations Disarmament and Civilian Overseas Evacuation Branch in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.

After his retirement, Capt. Talman served as a consultant on disarmament to the Department of Defense. In 1960, he became an instructor in Latin American affairs at the Military Assistance Institute.

He was a member of the Chevy Chase Club and the Loyal Legion.

Capt. Talman is survived by his wife, Barbara Miller Talman, of 2818 36th Pl. N.W.
two sons, a daughter, ,and a sister

He will be buried with full military honours at Arlington Cemetery at 11 a.m. Wednesday."
