Stories

At Sea Rescue

Formosa

Lt (Jg) Donald Francis Seiz and the crew of his TBF (John Francis Brady RM3c, C.B. Talbot) were struck by anti-aircraft fire after an unsuccessful torpedo run against a cargo ship.  The damage caused one wheel to come down while the other remained retracted.  He was unable to jettison the torpedo but made a water landing near an American destroyer.  Seiz and his crew were rescued at 1430 by the DD-700 USS Haynsworth.  He was a part of VT-20 flying from the USS Lexington during strikes against Formosa that day.  Haynsworth war deck log reports, "recovered the following officer and men all in good condition."
