Will was killed during the second "Battle of Marne", the "Aisne-Marne Offensive" on August 1. At 2:00 pm the 128th advanced on BellevueFarm and Hill #230 above Gierges, France. They secured both and later moved toward Reddy Farm beyone Hill #230.

This battle has been described as "the beginning of the end" and "the turning point" in WWI. The battle countered the German advance on Paris which was stopped 40 miles short. By August 4th, three days after Will was killed, the Germans began pulling back.
