Summary

Merwin Black was the older son of Samuel H. B. Black (1808-1847) and Frances Matilda (Fanny) Merwin (1815-1844), who came from Newark, NJ, and later lived in Natchez, MS. After the death of his parents, he and his two siblings, Frances R. and Lincoln, went to live with Rev. Augustus Pomeroy (1795-1875) in such places as Lacon, IL, and Groton, NY. Merwin fought for the Union Army during the Civil War.
