Son of William Rodgers (1794-1866) and Mahala Lowe (1798-1873), of Concord, Knox Co., TN. He first married Mary Ellen Wallace (1830-1867), daughter of Capt. Wm. Wallace and Mary (Polly) Chamberlain, of Blount Co., in 1855. With her, he had a family of five children: Charles Craig; Lucy Belle; Wm. W.; Mary Amanda; and Sarah Tennessee (Sally). Following the Civil War, the couple moved to Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., CA. After Mary Ellen's death, he married her widowed niece, Isabella Dick (Saffell) Scruggs, a daughter of L. B. Saffell (1810-1874) and Sarah Alexander Wallace (1815-1884). With Isabella, he had five more children: George Donnell; Frank Learner; Viola; Rosa; and Harry Alexander. A. W. Rodgers was a farmer, stock raiser, and shipper. He died the victim of a yellow fever epidemic while on a business trip to Mazatlán, Mexico, in 1883.
