Summary

The son of Samuel Bicknell, Sr., and Margaret Fain, Samuel Temple Bicknell was a merchant, farmer, and lawyer. He was also a prominent member of the TN State Assembly. In 1840, he married Mary B. Wallace, the daughter of Gen. Wm. Wallace and Margaret Chamberlain, of Blount Co., TN. The couple lived in Maryville, Blount Co., and, after the war, in Columbia, Maury Co. They had six children. At the time of his death, Samuel was in Nashville attending to his duties as a state legislator. He is said to have been overcome with shock and grief and died as the result of hearing the sudden news of the murder of his son John, who had been working as an itinerant salesman. (According to other reports, he was already a dying man when the news of his son's murder was disclosed.) During the Civil War, Samuel T. Bicknell apparently served as an officer in the Confederate quartermaster's office. The location of his burial is not currently known.
