Son of Edward Tate and Lucy Hughes Moody, and husband of Katherine A. K. McConnell and Elizabeth Jane Chamberlain, S. N. Tate was the father of seven children. He graduated with a degree in medicine from Holston College, in New Market, Jefferson Co., and became a prominent physician in the Grainger Co. area of E. TN, having begun his medical practice at Buffalo in 1846. In 1853, a bastardy bond was issued against him for allegedly having fathered a child out of wedlock with Elizabeth Travis. Apparently, both Ms. Travis and the child died before the case could come to trial. Dr. Samuel N. Tate was a Mason, a Republican, and, in religious matters, a Methodist.
