Daughter of Andrew Chamberlain (1806-1833) and Mary Ann Cardwell (1814-1888). After her father's death, grandfather Robert Cardwell was appointed guardian for Elizabeth and her brother, Jeremiah M. In 1850, she married Dr. Samuel N. Tate, of Grainger Co, TN. With him, she had seven children: George A.; Lucy C.; Edward M.; Catherine A. (Kate); Mary Jane E. (Mollie); Comfort Knox; and Samuel N., Jr. (Her middle name is often given as "Jeanette.")
