Corp Billy Joe served with Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Republic of South Vietnam, from 29 December 1967.
Billy Joe was a Field Artillery Cannoneer (MOS 0811)on gun 6, 105 Howitzers.
During operation LZ Torch, near Khe Sanh, in the early morning hours of 11 June 1968, Charlie Battery came under a heavy volume of mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire supporting an aggressive assalt by a company size North Vietnamese Army Force.
Billy Joe was killed by small arms fire. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
