Son of John Chamberlain and Eliza Brooks Hutchins. John, Jr., was educated in a private school at LaGrange, MO. Later, he graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale College with a degree in banking in 1886. He eventually became the president of Traders Bank in Lexington, MO, and for a number of years also served as secretary of the Lexington Historical Society.
