Second son of Cornelius and Isabella Carmichael, who moved to PA from Scotland. James married Susan McBrayer about 1762, settling in Derry Twp., Cumberland Co., PA. The couple had five children. He sold his land in 1780 and removed with his family to Washington Co., NC, which eventually became a part of E. TN. He died in 1816 in Jefferson Co., TN.
