Confederate Civil War Veteran, Co. F, 10 Reg't Virginia Infantry.
George Christopher Hamman was a native of Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia. He was the son of George & Catherine (Schmucker) Hamman, born 8 Oct 1838 in Woodstock.
From his obituary regarding his military service:
'His war record was one of unusual interest. He held the rank of Lieutenant in Company F, 10 Virginia Infantry, and throughout the entire war. He was severely wounded in the battle of Gettysburg in the first part of July 1863, and was captured and held a prisoner by the Federal forces, being given to see the inst. of Federal prisons at Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, and at Camp Delaware. Upon his discharge from the Army he returned to Woodstock and has resided here since that time.'
