Son of Capt. Robert Knox (1768-1834) and Elizabeth (Betsey) Chamberlain (1835-1903), of Scipio, Cayuga Co., NY. He married Elizabeth Bulkley in 1856. Over the years, John was a justice of the peace and a member of the board of supervisors of Scipio. He also served as railroad station agent at Wyckoff's for many years and, at one point, was postmaster.
