Joshua Barton, Sr. (1718-1779), born in Chester Co., PA, was the son of Irish Quakers, Isaac Barton (c1680-1721), a cutler by trade, and wife Sarah Vesey (c1685-?), who came to America in 1714 from Clonmell. He was married twice and had a total of fourteen children, eight with his first wife and six with his second. Joshua lived in MD, NC, and VA at one time or another and was the father of the eminent pioneer Baptist cleric, Rev. Isaac Barton (1746-1831), of E. TN. He was killed in 1779 by a party of hostile Shawnee Indians while on a surveying expedition in KY for the Watauga Settlement, where he lived with his family. Son Joab was taken captive at that time and raised as a Shawnee.
