Son of James Carmichael (1780-1865) and Elizabeth Barton (1779-1869), of Johnson Co., MO. He married Catherine Jane Sterling in 1841. Died in 1862 while serving in MS as a courier for the Confederate army. (Several months later, his eldest son, also a C.S.A. soldier, lost his life during the second battle of Corinth, in MS.)
