Thomas Andrew Chamberlain (1830-1862) was the fourth son of Ninian and Margaret (Watkins) Chamberlain and a grandson of Jeremiah Chamberlain and Margaret Carmichael. A soldier in the Confederate army, he died in battle at Cumberland Gap. At the close of the war, his younger sister, Margaret A. Chamberlain (1832-1903), fell in love with and married Frank Armstrong Little (1833-1923), a Tennessean who had faithfully served as a lieutenant in the Union Army. The Chamberlains, like many other Southern families, were torn asunder by the deep moral divide brought on by the Civil War.
