Summary

Thomas Andrew Chamberlain (1830-1862) was the fourth son of Ninian and Margaret (Watkins) Chamberlain and a grandson of Jeremiah Chamberlain and Margaret Carmichael. A soldier in the Confederate army, he died in battle at Cumberland Gap. At the close of the war, his younger sister, Margaret A. Chamberlain (1832-1903), fell in love with and married Frank Armstrong Little (1833-1923), a Tennessean who had faithfully served as a lieutenant in the Union Army. The Chamberlains, like many other Southern families, were torn asunder by the deep moral divide brought on by the Civil War.

Thomas A Chamberlain Death Entry in Fm Bible.JPG
From the Ninian & Margaret Chamberlain family Bible: "Thomas Andrew Chamberlain, the fourth son of Ninian & Margaret Chamberlain, Died at Cumberland Gap, a Southern Soldier, January 13th 1862. An honester man, a better Soldier, & a truer Patriot was never allowed to live. W. H. Chamberlain" (This entry is presumed to have been written by Thomas' older brother, Wm. H. Chamberlain, who served in the TN Assembly in the 1850s and later moved to Caldwell Co., TX, where he died in 1878.)
