F. H. Sleeper was the son of Gideon Sleeper and Margaret McDowell. He was born in Madison Co., MS, in 1830, and in 1851 married Rebecca Clarissa (Clara) Chamberlain, the daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain, D.D., and his first wife, Rebecca Blaine, of Oakland College in Claiborne Co. With Clarissa, he had three children: Jeremiah Chamberlain; John; and Clara. Clarissa died in 1857 and, in 1858, he married for the second time, to a woman named Pattie Markham, who became the mother of five children: Wm. Markham; Susie Margaret; Lucy; Thos. Markham; and Van S. Fabius Hoyt Sleeper was a prominent attorney in both MS and Waco, TX, where the Sleeper family relocated in 1868. He served as a judge for a number of years in McLennan Co., TX, and was also a ruling elder of the Presbyterian Church for for the central region of his adopted state.
