Son of William Wallace (1737-1799) and Mary Wallis (b. 1739). He is said to have been born in Watauga Settlement, then a part of Washington District, NC. In 1810, he married Mary (Polly) Chamberlain (d. 15 Nov. 1844), the daughter or John Chamberlain (1742-1793) and Hannah Lackey (c1779-1811), of Blount Co., TN. Wm and Mary reportedly had at least seven children: Hannah C.; Washington Wayne; Sarah Alexander; Margaret Jane; Ruth A.; Ninian P.; and Mary Ellen. (His nephew, Gen. Wm. Wallace [1794-1864], also of Blount Co., was the husband of Mary's sister, Margaret Chamberlain.)
