James Sterling, Sr., was the husband of Janet Chamberlain (1790-after 1870), the second daughter of Jeremiah Chamberlain (1740-1829) and Margaret Carmichael (1765-1821), of Grainger Co., TN. The couple removed to Warrensburg, MO, before 1840. After James' death in 1852, Janet moved with her children and their families to TX. She may be seen on the 1870 census living in Bagdad, Williamson Co., in the household of her son Taylor Sterling.
