Second daughter of Jeremiah Chamberlain (1740-1829) and Margaret Carmichael (1765-1821), of Grainger Co., TN. In 1809, she married James Sterling. Some time before 1840, they moved to Johnson Co., MO. The Sterlings had six children: John; Margaret E.; Jeremiah Chamberlain; James; Taylor; and Catherine Jane. After James' death in 1852, Janet moved with her children to TX.
