Emmitt was my Father and I was 4 (four ) years old when he was drafted. My name is Patricia Ann Smith Curtis. My brother, Emmitt Lee Jr., was only two. I have memories of Daddy coming home after basics, before going on sea duty to the Pacific Campaign, Pearl Harbor Hawaii. We did not have a car and Daddy found a house in town for us to live in and Mama could get to the post office. I would say it was a good mile walk to the post office and Mama did it every day to get mail from him and to mail a letter to him....every day but Sunday. I have all of their letters that Mama saved. Little did they know that the war was soon going to be over.
When he came home after the service, I was so happy, but he had been gone long enough that my two year old brother did not remember him and clung to Mama for a while. We were lucky...he came home.
