Son of Michael Massengill and Dorcas (or Susan) Stone. First husband of Mary (Polly) Chamberlain, the eldest daughter of Jeremiah Chamberlain and Margaret Carmichael, of Grainger Co. Surname often spelled "Massengale." Solomon Massengill was born in old Washington Co., NC, the western part of the state that would eventually become Tennessee. (Some researchers claim that his specific birthplace was Watauga Settlement.) In 1790, he moved with his parents to a place on Buffalo Crk., in what was later to be Grainger Co., TN. The Massengills apparently lived close to the Chamberlain homestead, located on the Holston River at May Spring. There, young Solomon met Polly Chamberlain, whom he married on 7 May 1808. Solomon was said to be a deft trader with a flair for business and a propensity for hard work. By the time of his premature death in 1814, he had accumulated a sizeable fortune.
