Son of Lt. Col. James Chamberlain and Ann Sample, of Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA, and brother of Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain, D.D., president of Oakland College, MS. Dr. James Chamberlains was a physician and professor at the college. He died of typhoid fever while visiting his younger brother, Washington, in 1850.
