1864 — Pennsylvania
George joined the US Army on March 28, 1864. It appears that his wife was sent to Iowa because of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the fear that Robert E Lee might return to Pennsylvania. His daughter was born there in October, 1864, so he must have felt that joining up was the thing he must do. He was assigned to Company D, 184th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and fought in the Battle of Cold Harbor, during May and June of 1864, followed by the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia, June of 1864 to March, 1865. In April, 1865, Lee abandoned Petersburg and Richmond and retreated to Appomattox and the 184th chased him all the way. After the surrender, the 184th marched to Washington, DC, and participated in the Grand Review on May 23, 1865. George mustered out on July 14, 1865, and returned to Tyrone, Pennsylvania, and got a job with the railroad, and raised a family.
