Jeremiah Chamberlain
Jeremiah Chamberlain (1740-1829) was the eldest son of Ninian Chamberlain, Sr. (1719-1804) and Jennet Unknown (1720-1784), of Jefferson Co., TN, as family wills and other official documents unmistakably prove. He was an accomplished surveyor. He is said to have come to America from Ireland with his parents and siblings at the age of 16 (c1756). Jeremiah married Margaret Carmichael in 1787, and was the father of 9 children. The couple settled in what was to become Grainger Co. Originally buried in the Chamberlain family cemetery in May Spring, Grainger Co., TN, Jeremiah's body was among those removed to Martha Sunderland Cemetery, Hamblen Co., in 1941 to make way for Cherokee Lake. Although his headstone indicates that he died in 1824, his will and probate documents clearly show that he lived until 1829.
