Theodore Augustus Helwig

Dr. Theodore Augustus Helwig was born around 1834/35 in Baden, Germany, and emigrated during the revolution of 1848. He was a doctor in Minersville for a long time. An 1875 Minersville map shows that Dr. T. A. Helwig was located on Sunbury St., between Fourth and Fifth Streets. During the Civil War, Dr. Helwig served with the 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The unit mustered in York in September 1861, although Theodore did not enter until April 20, 1864. He first served as surgeon for the 128th PA Inf and 49th PA Militia and saw duty at the battle of Antietam. He was promoted from Assitant Surgeon to Chief Surgeon on February 6, 1865.
