Even though enemy contacts were light as August began, an enemy sniper still managed to take the life of another Curahee on August 5, 1968. Sgt. Blaine Clarence Schaffer, 20, of Slatedale, Pennsylvania was killed by sniper fire while traveling with a truck convoy from Long Binh to Phan Thiet. Blaine was born November 30, 1947 and his home of record was Slatedale, Pennsylvania. He was survived by his mother, Mrs. Ida C. Schaffer and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Cora Schaffer. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence W. Schaffer. Blaine received his basic training at Fort Gordon, Georgia and completed Airborne Training there, as well. He died of his wounds in Tachikawa Air Force Base Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. Blaine is buried in Slatedale Cemetery, Slatedale, Pennsylvania. God rest your soul, Currahee!
