Stories

My recollection of John Lipka, a good man.

Whiting, Indiana

John worked in a plant in Whiting where I was a new supervisor.  His story, as I recall, was of being wounded by combat, captured by the NK army, then treated properly for a fractured skull so that he was alive and able to be repatriated after the truce.

Some of the stories he told about the behavior of American troops toward the Korean civilians were harrowing.  Beastly criminality in some cases.  Those stories helped shape my understanding of the reality of military service, that our troops are no better and sometimes worse, than every other improperly supervised army in the world.  Rape and murder were what he described.

Not to be misunderstood. John objected to the bad conduct that he was made aware of. he was not a participant.
