Adam Herzinger, native of Germany, immigrated to the United States and just a few years later served two voluntary tours of duty in the New Jersey Infantry on behalf of the Union. His tours included: Private with the NJ 26th Infantry and as a Sergeant with the NJ 39th Infantry. With the NJ 39th, his unit stormed Fort Mahone at Petersburg, Va. on April 2, 1863 leading the charge to break the siege alongside the Vermont 5th. The aftermath is depicted in the opening scene of the 2012 movie "Lincoln" where the President is seen sitting and talking with soldiers at Fort Mahone.
