Citation: "For distinguishing himself by meritorious assignment while participating in the aerial flight as pilot of the Carrier based fighter plane assigned to strike against enemy shipping in the vicinity of the Bonin Islands on 4 August, 1944. In spite of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, and with complete disregard for his own safety, he performed his mission in an outstanding manner and launched repeated strafing attacks to minimum range against destroyers of the convoy screen. these attacks contributed materially to the destruction of the destroyer., and to severely damaged another. His skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navel Service." M. A.
