Clarence Herte's WWII Naval Career

Enlisted 23 Oct 1940 in Chicago IL

After training, he was sent down to San Diego CA and brought aboard the USS Whitney (AD-4) in July 1941. The basics can be found at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Whitney_(AD-4)

but the page also contains External Links for more detailed information. He was in Pearl Harbor on December 7. He stayed with the Whitney in the Pacific Theater until February 1944.

At that time, he was transferred to a new construction, the USS Duluth (CL-87). Again, more info can be found starting at:

He stayed with this ship from its commissioning in September 1944 until September 1946 (surviving a typhoon along the way), at which time his 6 years were up. Then, he hopped on a carrier, the USS Boxer (CV-21) for a ride back to San Diego, by which time he had worked his way up to Chief Machinist Mate.
