F1c Robert Vander Molen Jr. served aboard USS Edsall (DD-219).  Edsall  was sunk on 1 March 1942 south of Java. She was attacked by Imperial Japanese Navy warships, including battleships Kirishima and Hiei, and by carrier dive bombers from Soryu and Akagi.
