This memorial is dedicated to the man who was born in Americus, Kansas, travelled west with his family to Oregon and California, set off to South America and became a plantation manager, married a Louisiana woman, had four children and a troubled marriage. He died when the German U-boat U-124 sunk the S.S. Ceiba off Cape Hattaras in 1942, as he was trying to get back to the States from Jamaica.
