Capt Mac McKibbin was most proud of having saved the life of a young seaman who had fallen overboard into angry seas. The CAPT remembered something a submariner had told him once about how he was able to go back and find someone who was adrift in the water. He used this method to go back and find the seaman and he saved his life even though his ship was many times bigger than a submarine. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.

Later, he was picked to be the pilot for Secretary of the Navy, Knox, and took him on a trip to South America. He also flew for Admiral Nimitz.

Capt McKibbin was a 1933 graduate of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. His family went back to the early 1600s in this country and he was descended from the family Sherman family of GEN WM Tecumseh Sherman, and Roger Sherman's brother Edumund. Roger signed the Declaration of Independence.

Mac's father, Royal Bird McKibbin, was a representative from Gladwin County, Michigan to the Michigan Legislature, and he was on the board of MSU when it was Michigan Agricultural College.

When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, CAPT McKibbin's squardron had the duty, and many of them were killed. His car was used as an ambulance.

CAPT McKibbin is buried with his wife Eleanor in Arlington National Cemetery.
