Homemade Love

Williamsburg, Antrim County, Michigan

I could not enter a date as Grandma came to our house every summer of my life and before.  My parents managed a very large fruit farming operation and she would help throughout the spring and summer by watching the children while mom and dad would work the orchards and run the picking crews.

Detroit Tigers on the radio, a deck of cards for solitaire, and a cigarette along with all the hugs we could give her is all she needed to be so happy.  As for us, Grandma's cookies and her rice pudding were staples for us.  I can still get a waft of the aroma as I am writing.  She was small in stature, plump for hanging onto, and the kindest lady I have ever known.  She had a hard life but her children all took turns having her live with them.  A very close family indeed they were and she was the rock and the glue for all of them. Raymond, Leon, William G. "Jerry", Lola, Duane, Nancy and the angels she buried so young, Lovinia Irene and Frankie.

John C. Flumerfelt, funeral conductor and Rev. Fred Clark officiating. Final Resting Place, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Oakwood, Oakland County, Michigan. "The Gateway of Life" verse inside card. I remember this funeral very well as it was just 1 day before my 15th birthday.
