Fred M. Shinnick, the man who founded The Haven Hospital on Walton Blvd. 33 years ago, died Tuesday at the age of 88.
He lived at 1035 N. Woodward Ave., Birmingham.
The Haven, famous across the nation, was started by Mr. Shinnick and his wife Lillian in 1932. The large home was built by Mr. Shinnick as a residence in 1927.
Mr. Shinnick was originally an industrialist, working in executive positions with Briggs Manufacturing, Parsons Manufacturing and Central Iron Foundry.
He operated The Haven until his retirement in 1938. It was then taken over by his son, Graham. Another son, Fred M. Shinnick, Jr., operates the new Avondale Nursing Center on Walton Blvd. where Mr. Shinnick died.
Surviving with the two sons are his widow and a daughter, Mrs. Retta Griffin of Daytona Beach, Fla.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hamilton Funeral Home, Birmingham. Interment is in Roseland Park Cemetery.
