Veterans applying for benefits under the Pension Law of 1818 had to provide after 1820, a schedule of their property and income. Many schedules also contain genealogical data on spouses, children, grandchildren or other heirs.

On this 14th day of June 1820 personally appeared in open court being a court of record for sd county & having a seal Ned Freedom aged fifty nine years resident in sd county & District who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows: that is I enlisted I think in the year 1776 or 1777 am not certain which as a private during the war in the State of Connecticut in Col Meigs’s Regiment & Capt Mansfield Company and served until the close thereof when I was discharged on the 2nd of June 1783 at West Point State of New York – as per his declaration forwarded to the war department of April 1st 1818- The number of the pension certificate is 10.115 on which he has received pay at the rate of eight dollars per month from the 1st day of April 1818 to the 4th day of March 1820

 

And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 [date] and that I have not since that time by gift or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an Act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land & naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War” possessed on the eighteenth day of March 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or security, contract in debts due to me, nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed & by me subscribe – except necessary wearing apparel & bedding

And I do further say that my occupation is that of a day laborer, my family consists of a wife & three children.  Priscilla, my wife, is forty six years old – Alton is 14 years old – Mary is nine years old and Aurilea is six years old – I am able to labor but not to support my family without some assistance-

Subscribed sworn to & declared in open court aforesaid thereupon said court is, on satisfactory proof made in court of opinion that the total amount in value of the property exhibited in the aforesaid schedule is seven dollars $ 14 cents-; and doth order these proceeding to be entered in the record of said court
