While serving in the US Navy aboard the USS TREGO was WOUNDED WITH SCHRAPNEL IN HIS LEG WHEN HIS SHIP USS TREGO  WAS BOMBED BY THE JAPANESE. He was only 16 years old! He recovered in the Pearl Harbor Navy Base Hospital and went on to serve as a page in the  Pentagon in Washington, DC.  Later he joined the US Merchant Marines and again was wounded when this ship too was bombed in the South Pacific . He retired from the NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING AND DRY DOCK COMPANY AFTER SERVING 30 YEARS.  MY father-in-law helped build the ship USS TREGO at the WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA SHIPYARD!
