Nelson Dickerson

Nelson was appointed Postmaster in 1833 for Pleasant Valley, now Eton, GA in Murray Co. He was also elected 1st clerk or the Superior Court of Murray Co in 1833. As clerk he worked with and knew Elias Boudinot, theerokee editor of the Cherokee Phoenix, and many of the principals of the Cherokee nation who would soon be assassinated of removed to the west during the Trail of Tears..

Residence in Cave Spring, Floyd Co, GA vabernadded this on 30 Jun 2011 Nelson and Rebecca moved to Cave Spring after the 1870 Census in Cherokee County, GA. Son Thomas Evans Dickerson and wife Selenia Knox and family had moved here with deaf daughter Gertrude, who is listed in early records of Georgia School for the Deaf as in school in 1867. Her deafness is listed as congenital. It is not clear if Nelson and Rebecca moved in with Thomas's family or where his home was at that time. He did buy Talallah Estates, formerly the Gill Estate on what is now Perry Farm Road, June 6, 1876. Nelson died October 27th, 1876 at about 83 as he was 77 in the 1870 Census. He is buried in the Dickerson Lot, Round Hill Cemetery, just west of the Cave Spring Historic Depot. Headstone is undated.

Nelson Dickerson: First Clerk of Murray Co., GA Superior Ct. vabernadded this on 3 Jul 2011 Nelson Dickerson is listed as the first clerk of the Murray County, GA Superior Court, serving 1833-1834. During his tenure, he protested an election of two probate judges whose election was tainted by ineligible voters. A new election was ordered, but the poles were only open for an hour in mid afternoon and the results did not change. Nelson was also the foreman of the Jury that found James Graves, a Cherokee, guilty of killing a white man some 4 years before the trial, and unknown until Graves bragged about the incident while in his cups. He was convicted, housed in Cassville jail until brought back to Murray Co. when the sentence was carried out.
