Early Life

| Salem, Washington County, Indiana

John M. Buford was born in Salem, Indiana on February 26, 1875. He was employed as a farmer before he elisted in the regular army.  He served in the U.S. Regular Army for several years and then left the military.

Service before Battle

| El Paso, Texas

With the advent of war, John Buford re-enlisted in the army in el Paso, Texas.  He was assigned to Company C, 26th Infantry, 2nd Division.  This unit was sent overseas on September 7, 1917.

World War I Battlefields and death

| France

Buford's units served in the battles of Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne.  He died of pneumonia on December 2, 1918 at Briey, Meurthe-et-Moselle.  He held the rank of Sergeant at the time of his death. 

John M. Buford was buried in Grave No. 5, American Cemetery, Briey, Meurthe-et-Moselle.
