Edison begins commercial electricity production.

Following his revolutionary invention of the incandescent light buld in 1876, on October 15, 1878, Thomas Edison combined his various innovative companies to form the Edison Electric Light Company.  An early version of the General Electric Company, among the largest companies in the world today, the company eventually settled its headquarters in Schenectady, New York.  Edison retained his laboratory in Menlo Park for new designs and inventions.
