Henry John Winternheimer was born near Chandler, Indiana.  He worked as a farmer on the family farm until he entered service with two of his best friends, Henry Michael Kapperman and Oscar S. Hartig, on June 28, 1918 at Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana. He and Hartig were cousins of some degree. Je was sent to Purdue University Student Army Training School.  From there he was transferred to Battery A, 20th Battalion, Field Artillery Replacement Draft.  He died of influenza on 11 October 1918 at Camp Taylor, Jefferson County, Kentucky.  His body was shipped home and he was buried near Chandler, Warrick County, Indiana.
