Hail to the Hero! | Thomas P...
IN 1943 my Uncle Herbert Hopp’s torpedo bomber went down in flames on New Georgia Island in the South Pacific. I thought I’d note the passing of this day, drink a toast to Herb, and try to imagine what he went through in defense of his home and country. His is a tale of heroic suffering, but also of triumph in a way, and a tremendous tale of survival.

Unsung Naval Aviator
February 1943 | Guadalcanal
My Uncle Herbert Hopp was the turret gunner on a Grumman Avenger TBF torpedo bomber that attacked a Japanese flotilla that was attempting to evacuate the beleaguered Japanese army on Guadalcanal on 4 February 1943. His plane was shot down and crash landed on New Georgia Island. The Pilot was killed instantly but Herb got his radioman out of the plane and went through the jungle for help from the natives. Quite a story. Wish I could find out more.
